Take a break.
As women, we juggle so many responsibilities that we often forget to care for ourselves. We try to manage our careers, our families’ needs, household chores, and social lives, among many other things. The result is burnout. However, taking a break can energize us and give us the energy to tackle the challenges ahead.
Taking time for ourselves may seem a luxury, but it shouldn’t be. Taking a break is about intentionally slowing down and giving yourself permission to rest, recharge, and reconnect with yourself. The idea is to take time from your daily routine and give your body and mind the chance to rejuvenate.
Taking a break looks different for everyone, but the key is doing something that fills you with joy and energizes you. You could walk in nature, listen to your favorite song, read a chapter of a new book, sleep in, or plan a staycation. Whatever you choose, ensure it allows you to disconnect from your daily routine and tune into your inner voice.
Whether it’s a new outfit, your favorite flowers, a new restaurant, or anything else you’ve had your eye on – treat yourself! Treating yourself with little moments of pleasure will surely uplift your mood, and you’ll feel happier and ready to face any challenges.
There are many ways to treat yourself: spa day, thrift shopping, movie time, new food dish, new novel, or journal writing. The main goal is to define what a treat is for you, and carve out a little time out to enjoy it.
Make time for friends and family.
Self-care is all about caring for our minds, bodies, and souls. One of the best ways to feed our souls is by spending time with the people we love. Family and friends are the backbones of our lives. Consistently connecting with those we love- whether a weekly dinner or a monthly activity – helps us feel more fulfilled and supported.
Find activities you all enjoy doing together. Family game night, getting takeout or dining out, watching a movie, karaoke time. The activity doesn’t have to be significant, just meaningful.
Although our time with family and friends can be nourishing, they can also be challenging! Be sure to practice self-care by setting boundaries, prioritizing your needs, and taking a break to recharge.
Self-care doesn’t have to be boring! It can be creative and exciting when we express ourselves and dive into activities that energize us.
Whether it’s art therapy, dancing, journaling, nature walks, sewing, music, or other creative passions you have, there are lots of ways to practice self-care creatively and have fun in the process.

Move your body.
One of the most beneficial ways to care for your body is exercise! Thaaaaat’s right! Exercise is an incredible tool that helps strengthen your physical and mental health.
Did you know that physical activity boosts the production of endorphins in the body, helps reduce stress, and improves overall happiness? Exercise positively influences mental health by reducing anxiety and improving mood and overall well-being.
The type of exercise you dive into depends on your personal preference. There are various options. You can exercise during your self-care time – from cycling and walking to dancing or joining an exercise class- whatever fits your schedule. Be sure to consult with your doctor first.
Consistency is key. Making exercise a planned activity into your day can help keep you motivated. If you struggle with motivation, invite a friend to go along! Having a workout buddy can be a great way to stay motivated, too!
Journal it out.
Journaling is an excellent way to release your emotions, especially those negative ones. It’s a safe space where you can freely express yourself without the fear of judgment and let out all your frustrations onto paper (or digitally).
Journaling helps you gain insight into your values, beliefs, and priorities. Take some time to reflect on your accomplishments, your setbacks, and lessons learned. Identify areas where you need improvement and come up with a plan on how to achieve your goals.
As with any self-care strategy, journaling is also personal, so choose the type of journaling style that works for you. Just 5 – 15 minutes a day has amazing benefits for your mental health.

Pampering yourself doesn’t mean spending a lot of money or consume a lot of your time. It can be as simple as:

- getting a massage,
- sitting in a comfy chair to read or journal
- bringing out the essential oils and meditating
- taking a mental health day off

With our lives becoming more digitalized, it can be challenging to disconnect from our devices. It’s virtually effortless to get lost in a sea of emails, social media, work, and never-ending notifications.
But, taking regular breaks from technology is essential to allow our minds to rest and recharge. Some simple ways to digitally detox include:
- Start small – if going “cold turkey” from technology is challenging or impossible, then take baby steps.
- Substitute with a non-digital activity (e.g., adult coloring books, puzzles, reading, writing, dancing, exercising, walking)
- Use a timer to limit your screen time.
- Turn off your notifications (where feasible) to reduce distractions.
- Actively listen – try having a conversation with someone without checking your phone. Give them your full attention.
A digital detox is an excellent way to increase your happiness, reduce stress, and take better care of yourself. Give yourself permission to unplug from technology every once in a while to be fully present in the moments around you.
Practicing gratitude is essential for self-care. Studies show when we practice gratitude, it can improve our overall well-being, boost our happiness, and reduce stress and anxiety.
Gratitude flips our focus on positivity instead of the negativity we’re hardwired to prioritize. It helps us appreciate what we have instead of what we may be missing. Best of all, it is one of the simplest ways to practice self-care.
For example, you can take a few minutes each day to reflect on the things you are grateful for. You can keep a gratitude journal, write thank-you notes, perform small random acts of kindness, or even pause to appreciate the small things in your life.
Incorporating gratitude in small and simple ways every day can become a regular practice that improves your overall well-being, too.
